What we collect
Your academic inputs: your grade, examination board (NSC, IEB or Cambridge), household income tier, the subjects you take and the marks you type in. If you write the NBT we record that fact. We also record when you accepted these terms, and which version.
To sign in we store your email address — that is all we need to send your one-time sign-in code. Signing in is required to talk to Lesedi and to save your report. We never ask for your full name, ID number, phone number or home address, and the rest of the app works without them.
We record basic usage events — moments like "onboarding completed" or "results viewed" — in our own database, so we can see which parts of Bokamoso are working. Each event is tagged with a random identifier created when the app is installed and, once you sign in, with your account. There are no third-party analytics or advertising tools behind this, and the events are never sold or shared.
If you are under 18, before you may use Lesedi we record your parent or guardian's name and email and the date they gave consent. That is our record of the consent, and the contact we use if you ask us to withdraw it.
When you talk to Lesedi, your phone turns your speech into text on the device itself. That text — not a recording of your voice — is sent to Anthropic (the Claude AI service) to generate Lesedi's replies and your interests result. Lesedi's spoken replies are sent to OpenAI's text-to-speech service to create the voice you hear; it only ever receives Lesedi's own words, never your answers. Both providers are contractually bound to protect this data, process it only to deliver these features, and do not use it to train their models. We keep only the result — your interests and suggested courses — NOT a recording or a transcript of the conversation.
If you buy extra Lesedi chats, the payment is handled entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never see or store your card or banking details — only whether a pack was unlocked on your account.
To keep track of which pack you've unlocked across your devices, we use a third-party purchase service (RevenueCat). It receives only your purchase status and an app identifier — never your card or banking details, your marks or your profile.
Where it lives, and what we do NOT store
Your profile, subjects and marks are stored on this device. When you sign in, your grade, curriculum, household income tier, subjects and marks, NBT answer, terms acceptance, your Lesedi result, and (for under-18s) the guardian-consent record are also saved to your own private account in the cloud, so you can get them back on another device.
The usage events described above live in our own database, under our control. There are no third-party analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs in the app, and no advertising identifiers.
If you switch on deadline reminders in Settings (they are off until you do), those reminders are scheduled on your own phone — nothing about them leaves the device.
We do NOT store: a recording or transcript of your Lesedi conversation; your card, bank or payment details; or a date of birth.
If you uninstall the app, the data on this device is gone. Data saved to your account stays until you ask us to delete it (see your rights below).
When we'd share it
Never — unless you explicitly opt in. The only sharing channel we anticipate building is anonymous, aggregated research with partner universities to improve qualification matching for South African learners.
That research mode is not active yet. If we turn it on, we'll ask you in-app first, explain exactly what would leave your device, and you can decline without losing any functionality.
We will never sell your data. We will never share it with advertisers.
Your rights under POPIA
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act, you have the right to access the data we hold about you, correct anything that's wrong, and ask us to delete it.
Open Settings and tap "Reset this device" to wipe the data on this phone in a single action. To delete data saved to your account — including your usage events — tap "Delete account & data" in Settings (or contact us) and we will remove it.
One small thing is kept after deletion, on purpose: a one-way scrambled fingerprint of your email address — never the email itself, and nothing about your marks, profile or result. We keep only this fingerprint so the one free Lesedi chat cannot be claimed again and again by deleting and recreating an account. It cannot be turned back into your email and is no longer linked to any profile once your account is gone.
If you ever want a copy of what we hold, the "Download PDF" button on your report gives you the full picture in one document.
